Jatayu – சடாயு (Continued..)
Scenario:
Jatayu is in death bed. Rama Lakshmana are by his side with grief. Rama lamenting, at the same time, very angry and furious. The reason for his anger was twofold. One that he lost his beloved wife Sita, kidnapped by Ravana, and do not know her whereabouts. Then, this old vulture Jatayu fighting it alone, now lying down beaten by Ravana. No earthly or no divine forces came to Jatayu’s rescue, though they were merely witnessing Ravana slaying Jatayu mercilessly. Rama was so angry with the entire world, the Sun, the Moon the stars the earth and what not. He was in a such a rage that he was threatening to decimate the entire the celestial system, and blow up the Sun and the stars to pieces etc., Even Lakshmana could not control or stop him.
For that soft spoken and pleasant natured Rama that we know, to attain such a peak of fury, reason was Jatayu’s horrible death fighting Ravana for the sake of Sita. It was unbearable for him. Kamban describes Rama’s anger (Roudram) in eight fitting poems. Two of them here today:
“பெண் தனி ஒருத்தி தன்னைப் பேதை வாள் அரக்கன் பற்றிக்
கொண்டனன் ஏக, நீ இக் கோளுறக் குலுங்கல் செல்லா
எண் திசை இறுதியான உலகங்கள் இவற்றை, இன்னே,
கண்ட வானவர்கேளாடும் களையுமாறு, இன்று காண்டி. ‘‘ (ஆரண்கா1003)
“தனித்துத் துணையின்றி இருந்த பெண் ஒருத்தியை அறிவற்ற வாளேந்திய அரக்கன் பற்றிக் கொண்டு செல்ல, நீ (சடாயு) போரிட்டு இத்தகைய நிலையை அடைந்தும், நடுங்காத உலகையும், தடுக்காத தேவர்களையும், கண்டும் வாளாயிருந்த எட்டுத் திசைகளை எல்லையாகக் கொண்டவையெல்லாம், நான் இன்றைக்கு, இப்பொழுதே முழுவதும் அழித்தலைப் பார்ப்பாயாக!” என்று இராமன் சினந்து, சடாயுவிடம் கூறினான்.
Meaning:
Rama told Jatayu in anger: ”You would see me today and now, destroying completely all the worlds with the eight directions as boundaries with the Devas, who all kept quiet even after seeing a helpless lone lady being kidnapped by a Rakshasa, and who was wielding a sword and cutting you to attain this state.”

‘இக் கணம் ஒன்றில், நின்ற, ஏழினொடு ஏழு சான்ற
மிக்கன போன்று தோன்றும், உலகங்கள் வீயுமாறும்,
திக்குடை அண்ட கோளப் புறத்தவும் தீந்து, நீரின்
மொக்குளின் உடையுமாறும், காண்’ என, முனியும் வேலை, (ஆரண்கா1005)
“இந்த ஒரு கணத்தில் நிலை பெற்று நின்றுள்ள மிகவும் பெரியவை போல் தோன்றுகிற (ஏழினொடு ஏழு), பதினான்கு உலகங்கள் யாவும் அழியும் தன்மையையும், எட்டுத் திக்குகளை உடைய அண்ட கோளத்துக்குப் புறத்தில் உள்ளவையும் என் சினந்தால் கருகிப் போய் நீரில் தோன்றுகிற குமிழி போல உடைந்து போகும் தன்மையையும் பார்ப்பாயாக!” என்று இராமன் சடாயுவிடம் கூறிச் சினந்தான்.
Meaning:
Rama full of anger, tells Jatayu:
“Please see that with my prowess in archery, all the fourteen worlds which seem to be big, nearing their final destruction just like the bubbles in water. And would get completely burnt out by my anger, along with all the Planets by their side”
Comments:
The effect of Rama’s anger is described in a few poems, namely :
- The world revolved like it was in a tempest. உலகம் புயல் போல் சுழன்றது.
- Rama was furious in his speeches இராமன் சீற்றச் சிரிப்புடன் பேசினான்.
- The world trembled. உலகம் கிடுகிடுத்தது
- Even Lakshmana was afraid of Rama’s anger நம்பியும் அண்ணன் சீற்றம் கண்டு அஞ்சினான்.
- The Sun had set கதிரவன் மறைந்தான்
- Kamban uses this term through Rama: மிக்கன போன்று தோன்றும் உலகங்கள், which implies, these worlds are not as great as they look before my own Prowess (தன் ஆற்றலுக்கு முன் அவை மிக்கன அல்ல என்பது குறிப்பு).
Very very strong statements by Rama indeed….
